in 2002 after going into remission from stage four liver cancer I started getting tons of pain in my upper legs. The pain got so bad that morphine was no longer working and ended up in Mayo Hospital campus for many months. I was sedated, put on 48 hour ketamine drips, and was told that this was one of the worst pain syndrome’s did ever seen to date at the time. Now it is like some surreal chapter of my life. We are blessed to not be able to bring back the feeling of physical pain. Of course, there is phantom pain with people who have lost limbs, but to for the most part our brain and body will not bring back the sensation of physical pain. Now, that is not the case with emotional and mental pain. I do not suffer from that, but I had my fair share of dealing with doubt, despair and being bombarded by negative thoughts, especially during my battles with cancer. That being the case I fought those thoughts and feelings like I fought to survive the physical pain. Having a great support network of family, friends and a medical team that would not give up was huge. My kids, Nina and Gunnar (@ninanels0n and @guapogrinch) were 5 and 3, and a massive amount of inspiration to fight and never give up. There was no guarantee that I would win, but I said, “I will fight until I live or die, but I will not give up!” I had to continually talk to myself to either replace the negative thoughts that would try to take over, or occupy my mind so I wouldn’t constantly honk about the pain. Now the strange thing is that I would also at times hyper focus on the pain, to try to figure it out, what made it pain and feel that way... but, I was focusing on my thoughts about it rather than let it take over my thoughts. It never ended unless I was sedated, tripping on ketamine or asleep, which was sporadic. I learned a lot about enduring pain and resilience through the experience. But, I had developed the attitude and mindset to endure and persevere through years of pushing my physical limits and becoming mentally tougher through the process. #resilience #endurance #pushyourself #fight #nevergiveup #pain #family #friends #mindset ...

Having good footwork and the ability to strike in motion also allows you to use that movement to draw the person in for a takedown. Timing is everything and having good footwork gives you more opportunities to draw in and set up your opponent. Training hard overtime develops endurance, resilience, emotional-mental-physical toughness... pushing myself call and working really hard to be good, better, best has built my confidence to push through and endure life‘s tough challenges. For me personally, it is also giving me the ability to endure and tolerate a lot of BS and nonsense, or at least what I consider BS and nonsense. Bottom line, I’m usually too busy doing what I love, working hard, trying new things, pushing myself to worry about trivial stuff that really doesn’t affect me. Also, I know that how hard I decide to work, how well I decide to do things determines how far I will get. I am also more resilient when shit doesn’t go my way, even after I have worked my ass off. There are some, a very very very little group that are doing too much. There is nobody that I know that fits into this group. There are many doing too little. Too little warm up, too little technique, too little drilling, too little conditioning, too little research and study, too little water, too little clean food, too little sleep, too little proper recovery, too little therapy... The first time I was stabbed, after I shopping carted the dude and pinned him against the car that trying to pick him up, I had a co worker keep him smashed up against the car as I ran to get the driver. When I started to open the door the driver floored it which forced the guy to be spun down to the ground. We both jumped him and I grabbed the knife hand and pinned it to the ground. I then had my co worker grab the knife arm/hand so I could do my disarm du jour, a bunch of full on hand stomps. It worked like a charm. I have also stomped and ankle or two, which also works really well 😁. If you ever have the chance to stomp on a bad guy, do yourself a favor and go for it. Worked Self Defense when pinned against the wall. There are walls, cars, and different barriers everywhere that you can be pressed up against. If someone is really try to smash you against a wall, there is a good chance they may have you body locked or an Underhook. Well, at least you know there hands are occupied with holding you. But, remember at anytime they they could back away and try to hit. Therefore, control their arms, hide your head and pull them in. Often times when you pull they pull away. You need to wait for your opportunity to counter attack and get off the wall. Flip the script and turn the entire position around and take over. Your goal is to get away and that might mean making sure they can’t continue to come after you. In other words, neutralize them, knock them silly, knock them out so they are unable to continue their attack. Round 2 of Perpetual Motion was to use your footwork and mobility to set up your takedown. Having the ability to set up, threaten the takedown or get the takedown is important. It is mixed martial arts, and using your footwork and striking to set up a takedown, or threaten one, is also a great set up for your strikes. A continuation of perpetual motion. The goal is to constantly be moving and striking. They move in strike you move in counter and immediately counter back. You don’t stop the goal is constant footwork and mobility while striking. You need footwork and mobility to land your streaks and to avoid your opponents. The fighter that is able to effectively move to both set up effective strikes and avoid damage, and keep doing it until the end of the fight is going win more often. Call one of the first and one of my favorite books on mindset and attitude was Jonathan Livingston Seagull by Richard Bach. Being a gymnast at the time the story of Jonathan wanting to fly faster, higher and farther than was expected resonated with me. Call Jonathan was not down with doing what regular seagulls did. He found the seagull life boring call and wanted to fly faster, higher and farther, and because of that he pushed the boundaries of his abilities. Cause he would push past his limits and fail, fall, and crash into the water. The other seagulls laughed, scoffed and scolded him for wanting to different. But, he felt his purpose was to fly faster, higher and farther, and the push boundaries and break barriers. And so he did! He eventually found others that flew faster, higher and farther than he thought possible and they guided and mentored him. He found ‘gulls who thought as he thought. For each of them, the most important thing in living was to reach out and touch perfection and that which they most loved to do, and that was to fly.’ Well, that is what I did almost 40 years ago and never turned back. I now live my passion with purpose and my purpose with passion. The goal is always to have a 2- 5 to 1 striking ratio. To do that you need to be continually moving and always active. You also have to return fire on everything that comes to you or move and come back to give more than received. To continue to keep up a pace of this nature you need to be in superior condition. I am an expert at getting out of problems that I have created, or that have been created for me and I found my way in them. Aren’t we all! No matter what there will be times when you’ve messed up, weren’t aware, thought you could do something, end up in the wrong place at the wrong time, or shit just happens. The more you do, the more things you try, the more chances you take...the shit you’ll step in. It’s going to happen! Now, I have phone from experience that if you freak out and panic, shit gets worse. Therefore, to lots of experience I have found that if you just stop and breathe and see that you are still intact, alive and able survive, you can think. Now, first I see how I can prevent further problems from happening. I don’t want to do something without knowing if it is going to make things worse. I definitely don’t want to spaz out. Once I prevent further problems I look to make one small positive move. If I can relieve the pressure, give myself more time to breathe and think, I do not move back into the shit pile. Once I gain ground, even a small improvement I repeat the process. Violence is agro, brutal, chaotic, explosive, fast and unpredictable. Once shot, be it from a punch, kick, slam, or your head bouncing off the pavement can change your day...can change your life. In a violent attack there may be no rhyme or reason, no time to prepare... it most likely will be random and unpredictable in all facets. Best way to prepare for violence is to mimic violence, break it down, create drills that allow you to progressively increase the pressure and pace of reality. Our entire life is made up of moments. When you look back on your life you remember key moments, good and bad, that seared their way into your memory. Many of these moments are where we learn our biggest lessons or point us in a direction that changed our lives. I feel one of the greatest skills in life is to win the moment. It is pretty simple, focus on what is going on. What do you feel? How engaged are you? What’s your intention? I try to see the world like a video camera, seeing and hearing as much as I can. I watch what’s going on, it’s wild the stuff you see when you are aware. The more you see and hear, the more aware you are to what is going on around you. The more you know what’s going on around you the more you can pick to learn from. The concept of Win The Moment was introduced from combat sports, but it gradually permeated into the rest of my life. Any challenge or struggle, win the moment and getting through it. Any time you are out and about, observe, listen, learn and win the moment. Seems like common sense to me. Maybe it is a life in athletics, on championship teams, being around championship level training, being part of champion training...but, I never heard a lot of complaining from the top level competitors. What I heard when things didn’t go right was, ‘I need to do XYZ’ , ‘I have to fix XYZ’ , ‘I have to work harder on XYZ’ , ‘I got tired and need to work my conditioning’ ... the mass majority of the time the blame and criticism was turned inward. Now, if you get more tired than your competition, that is 100% on you! Some how your opponent was in better condition???? Most of the time the top level competitors are choosing fatigue in practice, to push hard by choice rather than being forced to exhaustion in competition. Being fatigued by an opponent that is in better shape is a personal problem. I would rather be miserable and tired in training by choice, than be exhausted in competition. To be able to push yourself hard everyday you need to also eat well, drink a lot of water, get enough sleep...so this is often the NOT eat crap, do NOT drink a bunch of soda, do NOT stay up late doing whatever.... Choices. When I was competing and younger I yearned for the burn. I wanted to be the pace setter, and if I wasn’t I would never quit before the person that was. Now, present day, the competition is with myself, to not negotiate with the inner quitter. To show up and push through the aches and pains. To be consistent and steady day after day...for years. One of the reasons I love wrestling so much is the to win you have to fight to win every position. Once the match starts you have to out wrestle your opponent and fight for the entire time. If you are taken down you fight to get away and then fight to get control. Once you get control you fight to dominate the top, punish and pin. Meanwhile, the wrestler on the bottom is continually fighting to do the same. When skill is close it comes down to who worked harder to prepare to fight for every second for every position, and who will never give up anything without a fight, and then keep fighting until the end. It becomes a habit every time you walk on the mat or train. Then it becomes a habit in other areas of your life. Then it becomes who you are. Life is a fight, FIGHT BACK, and NEVER GIVE UP! We worked dealing with craptacular positions today. In a Self- Defense situation, when under a bigger, stronger person you have to first Survive and mitigate damage, then Defend the position and set up Escapes, Reversals and Sweeps. Defending your position and being a complete pain in the ass to control and hold is a big part of self defense. The goal is to fight with your skeleton (frames and structure) as much as you can and reserve your muscles as much as you can. If you have a strong defensive position you can wait for opponent to make a mistake or create an opening for you to take advantage of. I am not concerned with a strong combat athlete defending themselves, it is the everyday person that does have the upper level athleticism that I am focused on. When was learning how to walk and couldn’t use my legs after cancer, having the ability to defend my position using frames was everything. I wasn’t able to scramble and use the athleticism I once had and had to rely on strong position and proper mechanics. That was an instrumental part of my ground fighting development and gave me an empathy and real understanding of not being able rely on strength and scrambling to do the work for me. That enabled me to figure the essence of proper mechanics and technique to survive and escape. Now years later I still use them, and have built my strength and ability to scramble back to a pretty decent level. Without a doubt we are all dealing with different types of adversity, different challenges and struggles, we have all experienced tough times, discomfort and pain. The more prepared you are to work through problems, to tackle tough decisions and fight through the many battles we will face, the better off you will be. I believe that continually training, doing things that are challenging and make you think and work through is the best way to prepare for whatever. I know for a fact that in my own life continually challenging myself, pushing my limits, doing things that force me to figure shit out has been the ultimate training ground for the challenges and struggles of my life. Regardless of the weapon, the art, the tactic and techniques none are really that great if you don’t train them. The Heart of the fighter, the Martial Artist, the Athlete, the Warrior is TRAINING! The habit of training is what will save you more than any specific technique. Now, if you are consistently training tactics and techniques through a variety of training methods, well those tactics and techniques are far more likely to work for you. Deliberate and focus training is the best tactic to develop the techniques you want to work for you if needed. Personally, I do mot tolerate boredom for myself. Really hasn’t ever been much of an issue. Growing up always finding something to get into and always in sports, martial arts and being a full time ninja. I always hear or read the statement, “live as if this is your last day” or the like. Well, I have lived fighting to live day after day for months and it sucked! Also, if I knew it was my last day or week or month... I would be spending it chilling with my kids, family and friends ... I was 36 years old and training hard when I was eventually diagnosed with cancer. Prior to that I spent 20 years training, traveling, learning, researching, studying, competing, fighting, mixing and matching, teaching... the martial arts, combat sports and mindset. I was living the martial art’s lifestyle, maybe possibly a little too hard? But, I was doing what I loved to do, was pushing my limits, testing who I was and what I could do, and living the life that I believe I was made for. When cancer came a calling, the fight shifted and I had to fight with EVERY fiber of my being. I believe I can truly say I fought with EVERYTHING I had, sometimes just to breathe. I had one focus every waking moment, deal with the pain and fight to stay alive...NOTHING ELSE. All I wanted was to see my kids grow up. Well, as we all know, I am still here. It took me a few years after to just be back to where I could train again. Now, I am training, traveling, learning, researching, studying, competing, fighting, mixing and matching, teaching... the martial arts, combat sports and mindset. I am also more focused on energy, health and wellbeing. I am doing what I love, what I was born to do, it has not changed. I have changed, but my purpose and passion has not. I understand more than most the power of ‘moment by moment.’ It is why I do what I love, and have dedicated and disciplined my entire life around that. I have been able to see my kids grow up, was able to support and take care of them, was able to see them live their lives, was able to make a living doing what I love to do. After glove drills and a bunch of sparring rounds we are going over a couple of concepts for counter punching. The goal is to always come away with one or two things that are going to improve your overall game. There are so many little elements that go on inside a small exchange of strikes. It is the constant research and development, pressure test, drill, discuss, replay, question and answer…where the revelations and lightbulbs 💡 click on. The individual that loves the process of discovery, embraces the grind, and is willing to take risks and try different and new ideas, and who has the people around him that do the same, those are the people that are consistently learning, growing and getting better. It’s not just showing up (that’s the start), it’s the mental focus and intention you place on yourself while you’re pushing physical that is key. There are times to shut off the brain and just push yourself in conditioning. However, combat sports are tactical, technical and strategic, as well as tough, tenacious and savage. I’ve taken a lot of risks in my life. But, I have also lived a life of constant preparation for those risks. By always physically and mentally preparing through consistent training and choosing to take risks, not fearing failure...though I have been a bit worried about the potential pain involved😬 I have developed a lot of abilities and skills, and have done a lot of pretty cool and crazy things. Doing gymnastics, wrestling, and martial arts made taking risks and constantly doing and learning new things the norm. Now, in my mid 50’s I definitely take less physical risks. I have done a lot and this body has been through a lot, and I often feel some of the risks I’ve taken. I still train and prepare for whatever risks I choose to take, but take them for different reasons now. Have I been reckless? Many would probably say yes! But, those that were with me training and preparing would say that I did what we trained and prepared for. Take Risks! Life is a trip, enjoy the ride. It’s a new day, the beginning of a new week, so take a little time right now and be grateful for something. I generally start my day by opening my curtains and saying ‘Thank You for the day!’ Because I set my intentions to do so, I will find something amazing, often in the most simplest of things. It is actually one of the simplest things ever, I generally just have to look around take things in and wonder how it works?what is it? how are they doing that? what are they doing? why the hell are they doing that? and then I laugh or shake my head. I have a morning routine so I start my day out by getting something done that I need to do and what I want to do. A little reading, a little writing, make a nice healthy smoothie, brew my mushroom coffee, take a shower and turn it cold as I end with my morning affirmations and listen to some good music. Then I kinda start the process over again. I drive into work, listen to a podcast, look around as I’m driving...I get to the Academy, what I need to do is what I want to do and am amazed and grateful that I get to do it. I will smile and laugh, some ass will get kicked, I will see and learn something new, figure something out or make something up. Then I will repeat the process again driving home, then driving to wrestling practice, then driving back to the Academy to teach Muay Thai and Submission Grappling. Tis the season of the biopsy that located my second cancer in my sciatic nerve. I was @mayoclinic for many months in unbearable pain, on 24/7 pain meds, sedated, ketamine drips...with no end in site. Eventually I had a high powered imaging and then biopsy of my sciatic nerve. There it was the lymphoma had drifted into my sciatic nerve. Now came the guessing game as to how to deal with it. They knew the source of the pain and now had to figure out what to do about it. There were no known survivors to date that Mayo had knowledge of, there were very few cases known at all. The new year of 2003 was the start of the ending of months of unbearable pain. It fundamentally changed me physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. My perspective on many things has been altered, hardened in some cases and softened with others. The only thing that never stopped, delayed for a year to fight cancers, was training the martial arts, combat sports and self defense. One thing that has changed is how I view health, sleep, diet, water, breathing and down time. I pushed my body so hard for so long with athletics and martial arts, and then fought with every fiber of my being to beat Stage IV liver cancer and then Neurolymphomatosis (lymphoma in sciatic nerve), that I do not mind relaxing and enjoying life. Don’t get me wrong I train a lot, but I also take care of myself a lot more. That being said I still battle with spirts of youthful exuberance and with the aches and pains of 40+ years of sports and hard training, and changes brought about through a full body stem cell transplants, months of chemotherapy, and issues associated with years of opioids and sleep issues. I have been blessed to experience a lot. I also know what I have experienced and what I have not. I know what I can do, what I want to do, what I am willing to do, what I’m able to endure, what I’m ready to give and how far I willing to go because of what I’ve done, experienced and gone through. I have pushed hard and paid a lot. I have fought hard and made it through a lot. I have suffered and endured a lot of unasked for and never wanted pain because I have forced myself to experience and push through a lot of asked for and wanted pain. I have an understanding of what I do and who I am because I have fully put myself right smack into the middle of a lot of unique ‘training experiences’ that forced me to do or, well, get seriously messed up or worse. Living a life ‘outside the box’, ‘coloring outside the lines’ and pushing past personal boundaries that were already beyond normal boundaries has enabled me to experience a lot that makes me question a lot and call a lot of bullshit. I can make a lot of personal assessments because I have personally experienced a lot of the good, bad and ugly. I am very confident in my abilities, what I do, and who I choose to do it with because I have chosen to experience a lot. Inversely, I know what I suck at, where I need work, and why I’m willing to invest time to do it. Because of the experiences I have I don’t mind making mistakes, I love learning and realize what I do is ultimately based on experience which is not repeatable.
